Piaget's theory implies that computers can be a great educational tool for young children when used to support the design and construction of their projects. However, Plowman and Stephen found that the effectiveness of computers is limited in the preschool environment; their results indicate that computers are only effective when directed by the teacher. This suggests, according to the constructivist theory, that the role of preschool teachers is critical in successfully adopting computers as they existed in 2003. While each program’s pathway to quality will be unique, the following six elements represent the core components that are necessary for a quality program and are areas where policymakers should look to be supportive.

Well-established research continues to emphasize the importance of early childhood education as an essential building block of a child’s future success. While an early childhood education program should have carefully researched goals for literacy and numeracy, the foundations of academic success are only one part of a child’s intellectual development during the early years. An early childhood education program overlaps with a child’s development of gross and fine motor skills, physical coordination (hand-eye coordination, biking, running, etc.), and their understanding of healthy skills like hand-washing, regular exercise, and balanced eating.

Dahlberg and Moss describe it as democratic practices, in which parents and staff try to make meaning of these practices, acknowledging that there are always multiple perspectives to look at educational practices. This asks for a reflexive, researching attitude from the staff, since pedagogical practices do not have a meaning by themselves – an essence – but meaning is made or created through the perspectives of the people involved. This may very well be at the core of what building a curriculum – based on equity and diversity – may mean, when we acknowledge that respect for diversity is not about tolerating what is deviant from the norms, but about problematizing the norms that create deviance.

A program that continues activities like inquiry-based learning, outdoor learning and play-based learning, with a strong focus on social and emotional development will help build upon the strong foundation established by pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes (ages 3–5). Many families with young children may ask the questions, “What is early childhood education? ” To fully understand the critical importance of early childhood education, we must first understand the differences in learning and development inherent in ‘early years’ aged children, and the importance of a well-rounded and comprehensive education program during this time. As mentioned above, a bachelor degree isn’t currently required across the board, but as more programs become federally funded, this requirement will likely become more of a standard. Currently, however, an ECE certification program, which can be completed online, will qualify a person for employment in a variety of positions including preschool teacher, childcare provider, after school care worker, and childhood camp counselor. Digging deeper, there are several different facets that all combine to contribute to a child’s early education.
